Pacifiers and Thumbsucking

May 3 • 1 minute read

How Thumbsucking and Pacifiers Affect Your Teeth:

Once permanent teeth erupt, thumbsucking or pacifiers may cause issues with proper growth of the mouth and tooth alignment.  Tooth protrusion is one of the most common alignment issues caused by sucking. Teeth that are not in proper alignment can result in issues with speaking and chewing. The intensity of the sucking determines whether or not dental problems may result as passive sucking typically causes fewer issues than vigorous sucking.  On average, children stop sucking between 2-4 years of age.

Ways to stop thumbsucking:

-Encouragement

-If sucking occurs as a result of anxiety correcting the cause may decrease sucking

-Seeking help from dentists
