Dry Socket

A dry socket can occur after a tooth extraction when the blood clot forming over the extraction socket gets displaced. Typically, it is painful as bone and nerves are exposed when the clot is removed. Most often, it is treated by a dentist cleaning the site and placing medication in the socket. Dry sockets are the most common complication following the extraction of wisdom teeth. Risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing a dry socket include smoking/tobacco, oral contraceptives, tooth infection, and poor at home care.
